Xao and Xon fought in a flurry of blue and red light, faster than either Sara or Hue could see. “Down here!” a voice called. “The soldiers!” Sara said. She’d nearly forgotten about them. Had they really come to the Midnight Festival just for the egg? Or were they responsible for her winning it somehow? There was no time for answers. The catacombs shook with a cannon’s roar. Opeth was upon them, dragging Botan, Xon’s mother, on a chain. “Botan!” Sara called. Her wings were broken. Both brilliant blue eyes had been gouged out. “We’ve found them!” a soldier called to her comrades behind. “Tell the mage the egg has hatched!” Delphion watched from afar.
